This is a five-lesson English unit of poetry planning for Years 3 and 4, based on creating shape poetry themed on the summer olympic games.
In this unit, pupils will research different olympic sports and work on developing vocabulary to describe the different movements involved. Pupils will investigate shape poetry and begin to understand the relationship between the language used in the poem and the shape of the words on the page. There is also a grammar focus on adding suffixes to form comparative adjectives. At the end of the unit the pupils will work towards a visual performance of a poem that is created in the shape of the olympic rings.
The objectives of the unit for pupils are:
• To investigate shape poetry
• To retrieve information from non-fiction
• To apply grammar rules for adding suffixes
• To prepare a group poetry performance
• To create a shape poem

Performing Classic Poetry
Lewis Carroll - 2 week unit
A two-week literacy unit of work for 2nd/3rd Grade, containing lesson plans and pupil resources, looking at some of Carroll's funny poems and nonesense verses including the famous 'Jabberwocky'. In these lessons pupils will:
- read and listen to classic poems by Lewis Carroll
- use comprehension skills to tackle nonesense poetry
- engage imaginatively with classic narrative poems
- create their own Jabberwock creatures
- write their own versions of the poems
- make props for a dramatic performance
- prepare and give a performance to an audience
The poems include 'The Walrus and the Carpenter', 'A Strange Wild Song' and 'Jabberwocky'.

Activity 1: Christmas Tree Kennings
In this Christmas literacy lesson, pupils will learn about what kennings are and practise using them with a festive twist! Then they will make their own kenning poem about Christmas trees and turn it into a fantastic colourful kenning tree ready for a Christmas classroom display! The Powerpoint provided guides you though the full lesson, including time to discuss ideas and vocabulary. Then pupils can use the templates and instructions provided to make their own colouring kenning trees.
Activity 2: Christmas Riddles
Uh-oh! There has been a mix-up in Santa's workshop and the cheeky elves have left clues about the presents instead of labelling them correctly! In this lesson, pupils will help Santa to solve the elves' riddles and then they will write their own riddles about Christmas presents. Follow the instructions to turn the riddles into fun lift-the-flap Christmas presents, perfect for a festive classroom display! The Powerpoint provided guides you though the full lesson, including time to discuss ideas and vocabulary. Download this fun KS1 English lesson revising the four types of sentence: statement, command, question and exclamation.
In this lesson pupils will recap the different sentence types and then create ‘Who Am I’ poems about animals and transport using the four different types of sentences, supporting the TAF statements for Y2.
This resource contains a full Powerpoint presentation that takes you through the lesson including revision, main activities and a plenary. There is also an accompanying worksheet for pupils.
This activity is great for revising SPAG objectives at in Year 2 and can also be adapted for other year groups.
This is a ten-lesson unit of work based on reading and writing instructions.
The ten lessons in this unit aim to give children the opportunity to understand the features of instructions as a genre. In the first week, children will engage with the text type by following instructions to make edible Roman roads out of biscuits, chocolates and custard! There is also a grammar focus on using prepositions and imperative verbs. In the second week, pupils will use drama to develop ideas and extend their vocabulary. They will then plan their own set of instructions about becoming gladiator champions and they will then have the opportunity to draft, edit and present their final instructions.

A two-week literacy unit of work for 1st/2nd Grade, including lesson plans and pupil resources, looking at some classic poems by Rossetti containing with animal and mythological characters. In these lessons pupils will:
- read and listen to classic poems by Christina Rossetti
- investigate the effects of sounds and poetic language
- use question punctuation
- write their own rhyming patterns
- use their voices expressively in different ways
- create their own version of one of the poems
- prepare and perform a poem to an audience
The poems include 'Ferry Me Across the Water', 'What Does the Bee Do?' and 'What Are Heavy?'.

A two-week literacy unit of work for 5th/6th Grade, containing lesson plans and pupil resources, looking at some of Poe's atmospheric poems with dramatic mood changes in them.

- research the historical and literary context of the poems
